Two Cases of
Swine Flu Confirmed in Costa Rica
A 21 year old woman and a 29 year old man
are the first two confirmed cases of swine
flu in Costa Rica, some 35 others are under
watch, suspected of being infected,
according to the ministerio de Salud (Health
ministry).
In both cases the swine flu entered the
country by way of the Juan Santamaria (San
Jose) airport, both returning from a trip to
Mexico on Saturday, but on different
flights.
viceministra de Salud, Ana Morice, confirmed
that the woman travelled with a group of 92
others on a flight from Mexico.
The security measures at the aiport were
heightened as both airport employees and
visitors are taking no chances. Airport
personnel are wearing masks and using a
mobile thermometer checking visitor
temperatures and asking questions on where
they have been.
The ministra de Salud, María Luisa Ávila,
said yesterday that the woman is doing fine,
but may have violated quarantine, leaving
her home, knowing she had the symptoms.
Minister Ávila said that the health
emergency declaration issued by the
government yesterday now gives health
officials the legal authority to obligate
people to stay home or in hospital, under
quarantine.
