Ticos Rush To
Buy "Tapabocas" (Masks)
Fearing contact
with the swine flu that has two confirmed
cases in Costa Rica and killed some 140 in
Mexico, had Costa Ricans running yesterday
to buy protective masks, looking for
vaccines and vitamins. Many of the
pharmacies in San Jose sold out of the masks
by the closing time.
The masks of "tapabocas" as they are called
in Costa Rica, cost between ˘70 and ˘700
colones, depending on the type of mask and
level of protection.
At one pharmacy, Farmacia Sucre, the manager
said people were buying tapabocas by the
cases.
Although many Costa Ricans are rushing to
buy the masks, health officials say it is
not necessary. At this time.
Roy Sossa, an engineer with 3M in Costa Rica
recommends buying the more expensive face
masks, of course made by 3M, which offers
more protection and can used up to a week.
3M™ Triple Layer Molded Face Mask
The most advanced molded mask on the market.
Its fluid-resistant outer layer helps to
shield against blood and saliva. The middle
layer is constructed of electrostatically
charged microfibers that capture minute
airborne particles. And the soft, absorbent
inside layer soaks up moisture and provides
gentle contact with your skin.
The 3M™ ESPE™ Triple Layer Face Maskoffers
>99% Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE)
at a mean particle size of 5.0 microns to
help reduce patient contamination caused by
exhaled microorganisms.
