Cancel Or Delay Travel To Mexico
Mexicana de Aviacion and TACA both reported
massive cancellation or postponement of
flights from Costa Rica to Mexico following
the outbreak of swine flu that has now two
confirmed cases in Cost Rica, dozens in the
US and Canada and has killed almost 150 in
Mexico.
Mexicana and TACA are the only two airlines
serving Costa Rica with direct flights to
Mexico City.
Both airlines confirm that people are
cancelling or postponing flights, up to 40
or more daily and that could increase up to
300 daily in the coming days.
The two airlines are offering various
options to the customers, from not charging
a fee to changing dates to allowing a
non-end reservation in lieu of
cancellations.
On an internationa level, a number of
countries have completely closed off travel
to and from Mexico. In the case of Cuba, all
travel to and from Mexico has been suspended
for 48 hours. Argentina has banned all
flights to and from Mexico until Monday,
that include scheduled flights, private and
charter flights as well.
Major tour operators like Thompson, First
Choice and Thomas Cook have all cancelled
their services to Cancun. Thomas Cook said
it has cancelled all flights to Mexico for
seven days, while Thompson and First Choice
have cancelled flights until May 8.
Cruise ships are also re-routing itineraries
to avoid Mexican ports.
Although Costa Rica has not banned travel
and flights to or from Mexico, it is paying
close attention to travellers arriving from
Mexico, especially since both confirmed
cases arrived from Mexico on Saturday and on
separate flights. |
