Rafael Ángel Calderón Fournierm, who is in
the middle of a trial for corruption and
embezzlement in the Caja-Fischel case, wants
to be president. Again.
And as such yesterday registered himself as
a candidate for the Partido Unidad Social
Cristiana (PUSC) party, making him the only
candidate to aspire to lead the party into
the 2010 presidential elections.
Calderón, who governed from 1990-1994, is
confident that the trial will be over in
three months and that he will be absolved of
any wrong doing.
The former president has been on trial since
last November, accused of taking a bribe in
the purchase of medical equipment for the
Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social, using a
loan from the government of Finland and
brokered by the Corporacion Fischel. Seven
others are sitting beside Calderón in
defense of the charges.
It is unlikely that Calderón candidacy will
be opposed, as the registration for the
nomination closes today at 5pm and the only
person thought to be challenge the former
president, Jose Miguel Echandi, last week
denied rumours of his aspirations to lead
the party.
