Nicaraguans Drink More Soda Pop than Milk
Managua - Nicaraguans drink 80 litres a year
of soda pop and only 45 of milk, according
to statistics released by the Nicaraguan
Chamber of Dairy Products.
Authorities of the country, specially the
Education Ministry, are currently promoting
that the National Assembly approves the
Glass of Milk Bill, to benefit around one
million school children in the country.
According to Centrolac dairy company
Executive Director Alfredo Lacayo, there is
enough milk in the country to end children's
malnutrition, but there is no culture of its
consumption.
The per capita volume in the country is 45
litres, while in Costa Rica, with lower
production, people drink 170 litres a year.
Wilmer Fernandez, president of the Chamber,
expects that the new Glass of Milk Bill is
discussed in the National Assembly on August
27, thereby guaranteeing funds to include it
in the 2010 budget. |
