Brazil's Lula denies crisis in
Workers' Party
Rio de Janeiro - Brazil's
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Thursday
denied any political crisis in the Workers'
Party (PT) after a heavyweight shifted her
allegiance.
Speculations on a crisis in the party are
brewing after Senator and former Environment
Minister Marina Silva, one of the PT's
oldest members, announced she was leaving
the party to join the Green Party.
Lula said his relations with Silva will not
change, and anyone who is not comfortable in
the party is free to leave.
"Everybody knows that my relationship with
Marina goes beyond parties. I have known her
for 30 years," said Lula, adding that
despite the loss of Senator Silva, the
Workers' Party remains strong.
Meanwhile, Senator Flavio Airns announced
that he is leaving PT because the party has
gone against its ethics by voting to shelve
several nepotism denouncements against
senate chief Jose Sarney.
Senator Aloizio Mercadante also said on
Thursday that he will step down as PT's
leader in the Senate. Mercadante will meet
with Lula before officially leave, but has
stated that his decision is irrevocable.
