Tope
Nacional: Beer, Women and Party Time
Cars gave way this Saturday to make room for
some 4.000 horses and their riders in the
Tope Nacional or what could be described at
the largest outdoor beer party in the
country. The heat and bright sun shining
down on the participants and spectators
added to the cooling effect of a cold "cerveza".
The Tope Nacional is a San José tradition.
Each year, the day following Christmas,
Paseo Colon and Avenida Segunda are closed
off to vehicular traffic, to give way to
horses, their riders and hundreds of
thousands who come to see them.
The tradition, however, is more than just
the horses, it is also a time to drink
outdoors, have a picnic, a bbq and for the
women to show off their curves, assets and
cleavage. Lots of cleavage.
This year the the expectations of 5.000
horses was not met. But for five hours in
the sun and heat the party was on.
Unlike the Festival de la Luz earlier this
month, where consuming alcohol in the open
was prohibited, such was not the case for
the tope. Spectators, riders and even the
horses consumed. And all under the vigilant
eyes of the police.
This year's Tope was filled with excitement
and despite the beer consumption, no
problems were reported, although some
spectators got the scare of their lives, on
occasion, when some of the horses would not
heed to the commands of the riders.
