Llego La Hora! Epsy Makes It Official!

Shortly after noon today, Epsy Campbell confirmed her decision to run for the leadership of the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) in the 2010 presidential elections and face the party's founder, Ottón Solís, for the nomination.

"Llego la hora" (the time has come) is the slogan for the campaign.

Campbell, six months ago, discarded the possibility of running for the party leadership.

Campbell said that her objective is to see the PAC grow as it faces its third consecutive presidential elections since its founding in 2000.

Campbell has a tough task ahead of her, convincing the militants of the party that to win the February 7, 2010 elections, the PAC has to hold an open convention that allows as many voters as possible to elect its leadership.

"If the national assembly is inclined for a closed convention, they are the ones electing the leadership and not the people", said Campbell.

The PAC nomination is open until February 26, 2009, although it is doubtful that anyone else will through in their name in the hat as Campbell did, to challenge Solís.

On March 7, 2008, the 80 national assembly that makes up the PAC party will meet to decide if there will be an open convention or not. Campbell said yesterday that she will continue her fight to the end for an open party election so that all Costa Ricans can participate in choosing their leader.

At 45, Campbell if an economist, former legislator , former president of the PAC party and international consultant, is the first black woman in Costa Rica with presidential aspirations.
