Wal-Mart, Scotiabank and
Florida All Confirm Job Cuts
Wal-Mart, Scotiabank and Florida Bebidas are all downsizing due to
the current economic situation in the country, with layoffs of
employees, mainly at the administrative level. Wal-Mart has
eliminating 60 positions, while Florida Bebidas is cutting back 136
and Scotiabank 200.
The cutbacks at Wal-Mart is part of eliminating 200 jobs in the
region where it currently employees 9.500.
Notwithstanding the cutbacks, Wal-Mart at the same time has
announced an investment of us$29 million dollars in the opening of
22 new stores in Central America, which will directly mean
employement for some 1.000 people in Costa Rica.
Florida Bebidas said that the cubtbacks form part of its plan to cut
back 5% of the work force. The cutbacks will help the company face
the economic crisis, as well as the drop in sales due to the Ley de
Tránsito which has gotten tough on drunken drivers.
Florida Bebidas flagship operation is the Cerverceria Costa Rica,
the country's beer brewery. Florida also produces natural drinks
under the "tropical" brand and the "cristal" bottled water as part
of its operations.
As we announced yesterday, Scotiabank decided to cut back on its
administrative personnel. The bank currently employs 1.200, although
the bank was showing 1.378 employees in its information release in
January.
Scotiabank also confirmed that, as part of its cost cutting
measures, will be reducing overtime.
The three companies have all confirmed that they will be paying the
laid off employees their serverance pay in full. |
