Bus Fare Drop Approved

Users of public bus services have been waiting patiently for a reduction in fares and yesterday the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep) finally gave the approval to reduce fares 5.13% on som e712 routes around the country.

The reduction will be from as little as ¢10 colones to as much as ¢360 colones of some 3.589 fares.

The Aresep said that the lower cost of fuel, salaries and the Índice de Precios al Consumidor (IPC) - consumer price index - as factors in the fare reduction.

The regulating authority was clear that the fare reduction is nation wide and that individual bus operators can ask for an increase to adjust their fares.

Maritza Hernández, president of the Foro Nacional de Transporte Público (bus operators union), said the bus operators did not oppose to the lower fares, as this is the method used by the Aresep.

Hernández added that her membership has expressed a concern on rising fuel prices announced in the last couple of days and that fuel prices do not spiral while bus fares are being dropped.

The fare drop will take effect once the notice is published in the official government newsletter, La Gaceta, which is expected next Friday.
