"Barista" Finals Competition Today

The final competition for the best "barista" will be held today beginning at 2pm in Terramall, where 16 competitors will compete for six spots to represent Costa Rica in the Campeonato Mundial de Baristas (World Barista Championship).

The championship will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, between April 16 - 19, 2009.

Each competitor will be asked to prepare 12 cups of coffees - 4 espressos, 4 capuccinos and 4 original cups - for presentation to the four judges.

The preparation time is limited to 15 minutes and judged not only on the final result but the preparation method.

The competition is organized by the Instituto del Café de Costa Rica (ICAFE) in association with the  Asociación de Cafés finos de Costa Rica (SCACR). Following the competition the national group  Malpaís will give a concert.

Terramall is located in Tres Rios, on the autopista Florencio del Castillo that leads to Cartago

The World Barista Championship is jointly owned and operated by the Specialty Coffee Associations of America and Europe.

The first WBC competition took place in Monte Carlo in October 2000 and has since held annual competitions Miami (2001), Oslo (2002), Boston (2003), Trieste (2004), Seattle (2005), Berne (2006) and Tokyo (2007).
