"Barista"
Finals Competition Today
The final competition for the best "barista" will be held today
beginning at 2pm in Terramall, where 16 competitors will compete for
six spots to represent Costa Rica in the Campeonato
Mundial de Baristas (World Barista Championship).
The championship will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, between April 16
- 19, 2009.
Each competitor will be asked to prepare 12 cups of coffees - 4
espressos, 4 capuccinos and 4 original cups - for presentation to
the four judges.
The preparation time is limited to 15 minutes and judged not only on
the final result but the preparation method.
The competition is organized by the Instituto del Café de Costa Rica
(ICAFE) in association with the Asociación de Cafés finos de Costa Rica (SCACR).
Following the competition the national group Malpaís will give
a concert.
Terramall is located in Tres Rios, on the autopista Florencio del
Castillo that leads to Cartago
The World Barista Championship is jointly owned and operated by the
Specialty Coffee Associations of America and Europe.
The first WBC competition took place in Monte Carlo in October 2000
and has since held annual competitions Miami (2001), Oslo (2002),
Boston (2003), Trieste (2004), Seattle (2005), Berne (2006) and
Tokyo (2007).
