5.4 Earthquake
Shakes North And Centre of
Chile
Santiago An earthquake of 5.4
magnitude on Richter scale shook on Tuesday the
northerner region of Atacama and the Metropolitan
region in the center of Chile, without victims and
material damages being reported.
This is the second earthquake in the north zone of
the country in less than 24 hours.
The earthquake occurred at 12:46 p.m. local times
and its epicenter was located 90 kilometers
northeast to La Serena, some 400 kilometers north to
Santiago, according to the Seismologic Services from
the University of Chile.
According to the National Office of Emergencies (Onemi),
the earthquake was classified of medium intensity,
reaching a maximum of V degrees on Mercalli scale in
the cities of La Serena and Ovalle.
Meanwhile in the cities of Copiapo, Vallenar, Huasco,
Tierra Amarilla and Alto del Carmen in Atacama
Region it reached IV degrees as well as in the
localities of Andacollo and Rio Hurtado, in Coquimbo
region. While in Santiago it reached II grades in
Mercalli scale.
On Tuesday early morning it was registered an
earthquake of 4.4Richter degrees in the north zone
of Chile at 1:13 a.m. local time, without reports of
victims and material damages.
