Arias Positive On A Quick Solution To The Honduras Crisis; Agreement Possible Within 48 Hours

Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, said yesterday that he expects an agreement to be reached between ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya and post-coup leader Roberto Micheletti, during their meeting today at his private home in Rohrmoser (San José).

Zelaya arrived in Costa Rica last night, Roberto Micheletti is expected to arrive this morning (Thursday). However, early this morning there was no official notice that he would be actually attending the meeting.

Arias is confident that a solution can be worked out in 48 hours, enough time to reach an agreement if each side is disposed of accept the other's opinion.

"The crisis can be solved in two days, but it also could be that not even in two months can we find solutions," said Arias.

Though Arias recognizes Zelaya as the elected president of Honduras, he said Zelaya and Micheletti will be treated in the same way and none of them will have disadvantage in the negotiation.

Meanwhile, Zelaya has said that he will not accept anything but his restitution as president, while Micheletti has said that he will not accept the return of Zelaya to power.

"I know that the positions from both sides are very distant, but that is why we are going to sit down in a table, to dialogue," Arias said.

For residents of Rohrmoser, the posh west end suburb of San Jose, the Boulevard will be completely closed in the immediate area of the Arias home and traffic controlled for several other blocks.

The Arias home has been host to many foreign dignitaries and celebrities that include Mel Gibson and the Saudi Arabian Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal.
