127 People Detained In Protests in Peru

Lima - The Peruvian National Police on Wednesday detained 127 people during protests and demonstrations against President Alan Garcia's economic policies, police said.

Thousands of Peruvians marched on Wednesday to demand the suspension of free trade talks with the United States. The indigenous people were also demanding the abrogation of some legislative decrees which encourage foreign mining and oil companies to invest in the rainforest.

According to Chief of Staff of the National police General Miguel Hidalgo, protests and demonstrations were staged in many parts of the country, and protesters in some areas blocked the highways.

Of the 127 arrested on Wednesday, 42 people were detained in Gran Lima, three in Callo province, 14 km to Lima, and the rest were arrested in different parts of the country, according to the police.

In Lima, the protests have largely been carried out with order, except for a brief block of roads leading out of the city by tens of protesters in the morning.

The traffic of road Fernando Belaunde and the Aucayacu highway, which were blocked by 30 protestors since Tuesday night, has resumed, but in Cusco province some roads were still blocked, Hidalgo said.

Hidalgo said that only one civilian was injured in the protests.

Thousands of Peruvians marched on Wednesday to protest the pro-business policies of President Garcia, who on Tuesday announced a cabinet reshuffle after a violent demonstration by indigenous people in Peru's Amazon region.

A total of 34 people were killed in the clashes between the protesters and the police on June 5.
