Colombia Reelection Support Drops
Bogota - The number of Colombian that
would support a referendum on reelection for an
eventual third consecutive term of office of
President Alvaro Uribe decreased seven percent in
the last two months, a survey revealed on Friday.
According to the most recent poll by Invamer Gallup
pollster, published by Caracol Radio station,
although the number of people that would vote the
referendum increased to 60, the number in favor of
Uribe's second reelection decreased from 83 to 76
percent.
Meanwhile, according to the poll results, the number
of Colombians that would cast a negative vote to
that initiative increased in the last two months
from 17 to 23 percent.
Invamer Gallup pollster Director Jorge Londono siad
one of the main causes of the drop in Colombians'
support of a third administration of President Uribe,
is related to the perception of dealing with
corruption.
The study also revealed that if Uribe does not
participate in the 2010 campaign, the vote intention
in the first round would be 30 percent in favor of
ex Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos and 31
percent in favor of Medellin's ex Mayor Sergio
Fajardo.
Thus, according to the pollster, in case the head of
State does not run, either due to disapproval by the
reelection referendum or his own decision of not
running for a third consecutive term of office, the
contest for the presidency in 2010 would be between
Santos and Fajardo.
Colombians will go to the polls in March, 2010 to
elect 102 senators, 166 House representatives and
Andean Parliament members.
Later, the voters will return to the polls on May 30
to elect the president and vice president, and would
go to a second round on June 20, in case any of the
candidates reaches half plus one of the valid votes. |
