Peruvian Prime Minister
Leaves Office
Lima - Peruvian Prime Minister Yehude Simon left office on Friday after presenting
his resignation earlier this week to Peruvian
President Alan Garcia.
The outgoing prime minister has said he would run
for the presidency in 2011, but his political future
was overshadowed by a deadly clash between the
police and Amazon natives last month.
Simon said he had already fulfilled his role of
paving the way for the new prime minister to address
the issue.
At least 34 people died after police clashed with
native protesters demanding the government scrap
laws that violated their rights by encouraging
foreign investment in mining and oil development in
the rainforest.
"I said that I would leave the office once the
country was in peace and I think I have fulfilled
it," Simon said.
Garcia announced on Tuesday a cabinet reshuffle but
it remains unknown who will replace Simon.
