Panama New Government Strategy

Panama -  The future government of Panama is focusing on several economic and social strategies, in compliance with commitments made during their electoral campaign.

Among the priorities of the new government, which will take office on July 1st, are home construction programs, public transportation, security, and the payment of a bond of 100 dollars a month to every elderly person over 70 years of age who lacks retirement benefits.

President-elect Ricardo Martinelli met the assigned ministers and future presidents of autonomous institutions in the past days to define the projects to put into effect once the new government takes office.

Regarding transport, the creation of an institution called "Subway Secretary Office" to go forward in the public transport initiatives, is scheduled.

Martinelli himself centered the focus of his own strategy on this matter in his electoral campaign, by estimating he will need investments of close to 1.1 billion dollars.

Other options being studied are, a salary increase for the police, which would support the strengthening of security for citizens, which is one of the main demands of the national population.

Meanwhile, in the Legislature, possible changes include the cutting by 20 percent the National Assembly budget, which includes funds assigned to hire advisors for the deputies.
