Long Lines
Back At Escazú Tolls
The long lines
at the Escazú on the autopista Próspero
Fernández are back with the start of the
charging of tolls Sunday morning.
By mid day only seven of the 14 toll booths
were operational and traffic was backed up
up to 10 or more cars deep at each station.
Honking horns and shouting motorists
welcomed the opening of the toll booths,
which many feel is "excessive" as the tolls
on the road went from ˘75 colones (charged
only to wesbound traffic) to ˘310 for
passenger vehicles and motorcycles, ˘630 for
buses and ˘790 and up for trucks, now each
way, for a road that is basically the same
before the reconstruction.
Drivers on the Próspero Fernández face the
same frustrations and same dangers as
before. In some cases worse, as the maximum
speed along the highway is has increased up
to 100 Km/h in some points, with slow moving
traffic still using the left lane, not
paying attention to the new signs asking for
slow moving traffic to move to the right.
Many drivers yesterday took the only
alternate road to Escazu and Santa Ana and
beyond to avoid paying the tolls, increasing
traffic chaos.
Toll officials say that the cause for much
of the line ups was the fact that many
drivers did not have the ˘310 to pay the
tolls.
