Companies
Hiring Less, Poll Reveals
A poll by Manpower in Costa Rica reveals
that more and more companies are putting off
hiring during this time of economic crisis
that has affected many countries, including
Costa Rica.
The poll of 620 companies in Costa Rica
shows not only companies putting off hiring
over the next several months, but could also
see a decrease in hiring for the rest of the
year.
The results indicate that only 12% the
companies polled are expected to hire more
staff during July and September, while 13%
are expected to reduce (lay off) staff and
75% said they would be maintaining the same
number of people.
Manpower says that the net effect on
employment this year is expected to be -1%.
The director of Manpower in Costa Rica,
Erick Quesada, that since 2006 when the
company began taking quarterly measurements,
never have the numbers been so low.
"What this means is that there are many
businessmen thinking of laying off staff",
said Quesada.
On the positive side, said Quesada, the
majority of the companies polled are not
thinking of laying off, but then neither are
they hiring more staff.
The poll took in results from the
construction, manufacturing, service,
agriculture, mining, transportation and
communications sectors.
