Less Rain Predicted For the 2009 Rainy Season

The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) - national weather service - is predicting less rain for the Central Valley, the Pacific coastal areas and the Northern Zone, between July and October this year, as compared to the same period last year.

The IMN also says that the Caribbean coastal areas will get more rain for July and August, but less in September and October.

Juan Carlos Fallas, director of the IMN, says the effects of the phenomenon La Niña, in combination with the cooling of the Atlantic Ocean, a cooling that was not present as little as 15 years ago, explains the change.

Falles added that the common will be one or two days of dry weather and then three or four of rain.

The uneven distribution of the rain could affect farmers, especially in Guanacaste, said the ministro de Ambiente, Energía y Telecomunicaciones, Jorge Rodríguez.
