Bridge Repair Causes Traffic Chaos On The General Cañas

Driving out of san Jose yesterday afternoon was a nightmare greater than usual, as the one of the two lanes of the bridge over the Virilla river on the autopista General Cañas was closed down completely to repair one of the metal slabs to cover up a hole in the structure, as it had come loose again.

The work caused traffic to back up to the La Sabana during afternoon rush hour, a time when traffic moving west to Alajuela is at its peak.

Congestion at the Virilla bridge is normal, as the General Cañas reduces from three lanes to two over the bridge and yesterday one.

The Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) has not been able to repaid the bridge that has had a gaping hole covered up by a metal slab that occasionally comes loose from the heavy traffic and vibrations.

The work on the bridge is expected to continue today starting at 10pm.
