South American Front Takes on Hunger
Santiago de Chile - Legislators from eight
South American countries met in the FAO Regional
Office to prepare the Parliamentarian Front against
Hunger.
Parliamentarians from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela
participate in the Latin American and Caribbean
against Hunger initiative to reduce the number of 53
million Latin Americans who go hungry.
The "Parliamentary Front against Hunger" is an
effort of regional countries to promote the laws of
Food and Nutritional Security as well as realization
of the Right to Food through legislative work.
In the countries where those laws already exist,
work is aimed at guaranteeing assignation of enough
resources for the programs that combat hunger.
The Front intends to gather efforts of national,
regional and inter American parliamentarians to give
priority to eradicate hunger in public agendas and
set the legal, institutional and financial means to
achieve this goal.
In two days the meeting will discuss proposals of
the reach, statutes and functioning of the
Parliamentary Front to combat Hunger and will share
points of view for the final preparation of the
effort.
The second preparatory meeting will be held in
Panama City during July 13 and 14.
The Front will be officially launched in Sao Paulo,
Brazil, in the context of the World Day of
Nutrition. |
