Costa Rican Airspace Was Never Violated

Jeanina del Vecchio, the ministra de Seguridad Pública, allowed the airplane carrying deposed Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, as it was not a military aircraft and at no time was Costa Rican airspace violated.

The ministra said she asked the vice-ministro de Seguridad Pública to meet the arriving plane at the Juan Santamaria (San Jose) airport.

Vice-ministro Oldemar Madrigal said that two men believed to be military, who did not identify themselves nor were armed, accompanied Zelaya on his arrival to Costa Rica.

Madrigal said that the men simply handed over the Honduran president who was still dressed in his pyjamas.

Del Vecchio was emphatic that Costa Rican airspace was never violated, the aircraft was a "civilian" aircraft and communicated normally with Costa Rican traffic control officials, including asking for permission to land.

Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, the wife of the deposed Honduran president, was reported in hiding in the mountains of Honduras while her husband sorts of the legal and political problems of the country.

The Honduran first lady asked all Hondurans to remain calm and to defend their future.
