Heredia Considering Building Mega Sewage Treatment Plant

Although the project is still in the planning stage, its mission is ambitious, as the Servicios Públicos de Heredia is serious about constructing a mega sewage treatment plant to serve some 370.000 residents in the province of Heredia.

The objective of the project is to stop the contamination of the Virilla river, where polluted water is now going.

The plan will for the polluted water to be collected and sent to the the treatment facility in Barreal de Heredia where the plant is being proposed to be located. The treated water would then be sent to the river.

The plan includes the elimination of septic tanks currently used in many homes and to avoid further contamination of groundwater.

The plant would take in sewage from 8 of the 10 the cantones in the province of Heredia: San Rafael, San Isidro, Santo Domingo, San Pablo, Barva, Flores, Belén, and Heredia Central.

The cost of the plan is us$180 million dollars.
