UN Ombudsman Visits Guatemala
Guatemala - Leandro Despouy, special
ombudsman of the United Nations on the
Independence of Magistrates and Lawyers,
will arrive in Guatemala Friday for an
official visit.
Until May 13, Despouy will celebrate
meetings with representatives of the
Legislative, Judicial and Executive Powers,
the justice system, civil society
organizations, diplomatic corp and academic
sector.
In January, Despouy made another visit to
Guatemala and made different recommendations
such as the creation of a Ministry of
Justice, which should take charge of the
classic functions to define public policies
in the topic.
He also recommended a coherent protection
system, fulfilled in a unified way, and the
establishment of legal mechanisms on the
election of judges, and recalled on the
importance of establishing a real judicial
system.
He also said that the National Civil Police
did not count on the technical mechanisms
for a good work, so he proposed to
strengthen the mechanisms in the Public
Ministry. |
