OAS Backs Guatemalan
Government Over Lawyer
Scandal
Guatemala - The
Organization of American States (OAS)
Wednesday gave its support to the Guatemalan
government amid mounting tension on
Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom over the
murder of a lawyer.
The OAS approved a resolution, backing the
Colom administration "in its obligation to
preserve the institutions of democracy and
the rule of law."
Rodrigo Rosenberg, 48, was killed Sunday. In
an 18-minute video made public after his
death, Rosenberg accused Colom, the first
lady and the presidential secretary of
conspiring to murder him.
"If you are watching this message it is
because I have been murdered by President
Colom," the lawyer said in the video.
Rosenberg, who was a legal representative
for a prominent businessman who was himself
killed three weeks ago alongside his
daughter, said that Colom had had
businessman Khalil Musa and his daughter
killed because they refused to be involved
in corruption.
The video was widely viewed in Guatemala.
The Guatemalan government has described it
as "an attempt aimed at destabilization."
Guatemalan Foreign Minister Haroldo Rodas
earlier condemned Rosenberg's killing at the
Washington-based OAS and rejected
accusations of Colom's involvement.
On Wednesday, some 500 people crowded the
central square of Guatemala City in protest
of Colom, demanding a thorough and clean
investigation. |
