32 From Guapiles To San José Completely

Ruta 32, the highway to Guápiles from San
José was closed completely to vehicular
traffic at 5pm today by the Policía de
Tránsito due to numerous landslides.
The highway is also the main route to Limón.
The road will be closed until morning when
Tránsito officials will evaluate the
situation before deciding to re-open the
highway.
Tránsito officials say that they heavy rain
has affected numerous points along the
highway, but the main blockage is at
kilometre 24 east of the Zurquí tunnel,
where mud and rocks are blocking the road.
The closure is to allow work crews to work
overnight to clean up the mess, but also to
ensure that other landslides don't occur
while vehicles are passing,
The alternate route to Guápiles and San José
is by way of Cartago to Turrialba and
Siquirries. However, this road is very
narrow and could snarl traffic in case of an
accident or other occurrence.
The other route from Heredia to
Sararipiquí and Guápiles that passes through
Vara Blanca and Cinchona is still
closed following the earthquake of January
8.
