One
Out Of Ten Women In Costa Rica Unemployed
Figures released by the Instituto Nacional
de Estadística y Censos (INEC) of a
household survey done last July reveals that
one out of ten women in Costa Rica are
unemployed.
The Encuesta de Hogares reveals that some
80.000 of approximately 806.000 women in the
work force are looking for work. This is the
highest unemployment rate for women since
1982 when the rate was 9.6%.
Experts say the high unemployment rate in
women is a direct effect of the economic
crisis and even though it higher than
unemployment for men, grew at the same
percentage as men in 2009 over the same
period in 2008.
The rate in 2009 is 9.9%, in 2008 it was
6.2%, while the rate for men is 4.2% and
6.6%, respectively.
Expert Juan Diego Trejos says that women
suffer high unemployment for various
reasons, women in the work force newer and
younger, seek out salaried jobs primarily,
and their options are limited if they have
little education. |
