Tránsito Crackdown On Illegal Parking In Downtown San José

Cracking down on the illegal parking of vehicles in the downtown core of San José is the the focus of the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police), a problem that contributes to the congestion problems of the city.

In a single day yesterday, Tránsitos five 242 drivers ¢5.000 colones for illegal parking and towed away three vehicles to the Tránsito impound lot when the vehicles owners where no where to be found.

The main focus of Thursday's crackdown centred on Avenida Segunda in the heart of San José.

The ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) hopes to reduce congestion on the downtown streets from illegal parking. Rosaura Montero, vice-ministra de Transportes said "what we want is for drivers to respect the laws".

Germán Marín, director of the Policía de Tránsito, said that his officials are also measuring noise levals and contamination caused by the vehicles.

Marín said that five drivers were fined ¢10.000 each and had their license plates confiscated for exceeding noise levels. The low fine is seen by most as just a nuisance and not a deterrance. However, the confiscation of plates of towing of a vehicle to the impound lots can be a nightmare, especially for the owner of the vehicle, who is the only authorized to retrieve the plates or vehicles, and is not necessarily the driver.

In addition to the illegal parking, noise and contamination levels, Tránsitos also kept an eye on restricted license plates. On Thursdays all vehicles with the license plates ending in 7 and 8 are restricted from circulating in the downtown San José between 7am and 7pm.

Marín and Montero were emphatic that the crackdown will continue for some time.
