Lottery To Crack Down On Overcharging

The lottery ticket police will be out in full force in the coming weeks surprising vendors in all parts of the country to eradicate the problem of overcharging buyers of lottery tickets.

Officials of the Junta de Protección Social (JPS) - the national lottery - say that speculation on the part of the lottery vendors is common this time of year and plan to put an end, or at least to curb, the practice.

JPS officials will be accompanied by Fuerza Pública (police) officers who are duly authorized to sanction the vendors found overcharging buyers.

Margarita Barahona, spokesperson fro the JPS, said that officials are undergoing a training program to detect overcharging on the streets. The JPS is also asking buyers to report vendors overcharging.

The annual Christmas lottery - El Gordo - sells for ¢40.000 an entire ticket of ¢1.000 colones for each of the 40 portions. However, some vendors can charged double or more that for certain numbers.

Barahona said that is vital that buyers who have been overcharged to call the JPS to report the vendor and the location of the vendor so that action can be taken.

The number to call to make a report is 800 562 9148.
