Controversy Over Aero-Naval bases in Panama
PANAMA - The controversy over the
installation of aero-naval bases in several
localities of Panama are among the priority
subjects of the national agenda with protest
of student movements against this measure
that could favor US military presence.
Representatives of social movements have
repeatedly called attention to decisions of
authorities of setting up eight aero-naval
bases in different parts of the country,
both in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The government explained that this measure
is necessary to combat growing drug trade in
Panamanian waters and coasts.
"I strongly deny that Panama is going to set
up military bases of any kind in partnership
with the United States or any nation in the
region," the minister explained.
The US ambassador explained that Washington
would supply fuel for the patrol vessels and
also expressed her agreement with the
establishment of these installations.
In the political scenario Omar Moreno was
dismissed as president of the Panamanian
Sorts Institute (PANDEPORTES) because of
poor management during the five months
heading that institute.
Referring to the financial scene a world
bond was issued for the New York market for
a value of one billion dollars that would
imply a heavy injection of liquidity for the
country.
Among the international investors taking
part in the operation are Goldman Sachs
Asset, Wellington Management, SAC Capital
Management, T Rowe Price and Associates Inc
and Morgan Stanley Dean Witter. |
