New Social Welfare Agency To
Assist Poor Families In Costa Rica
The recently created Ministerio de Bienestar
Social: Fernando Marín Rojas (Ministry of Social
Welfare) by president-elect, Laura
Chinchilla, plans to help 20.000 families
climb out of extreme poverty during the next
presidential term, to begin next May 8.
Fernando Marín, the appointed ministro de
Bienestar Socialstated that the goal is to help annually
about 5.000 families, to reach the goal of 20.000
by the end of Chinchilla's four year
administration.
According to the Marín, different
governmental entities are expected to lend support the
project.
A complete study and an attention plan with
institutions of every sector, among them
health, will be done to
guarantee poor families access to basic services,
explained Marín.
In Costa Rica there are 222.615 poor
families, of which 50.000 live in extreme
poverty, according to the lasted poll by the
Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC)
- National Institute of
Statistics and Census.
