Panamanian Authorities to
Activate Naval Air Station
PANAMA - The naval air station in
Punta Piña, Darien Province, Panama, will be
the third station to be activated from the
11 bases of that type that are planned by
the authorities to be established to tackle
drug-trafficking.
According to the Ministry of Government and
Justice, that action will be carried out on
April 15 and the new station will be part of
those operating in Quebrada de Piedra,
Chiquiri, and in Chapera Island, Las Perlas
Archipielago.
Six of the station will be located in the
Pacific Ocean, which is the route
traffickers use the most.
The projects of the executive in that sense
provoked the rejection of union and student
organizations, which agree that this step
might be translated into an US military
presence in the country.
Minister of Government and Justice Jose Raul
Mulino ruled out, at that time, a scene of
that type and ratified that the stations
will be operated by Panamanian security
bodies' staff.
However, US ambassador in Panama Barbara
Stephenson revealed last year that three US
security bodies will train the Panamanian
staff and will offer a logistic support to
the activity. |
