Highways To The Pacific
Beaches Totally Collapsed On Thursday
Let's load up the family jalopy and head for
the beach. That was the sentiment of many
who, in the early hours of Thursday morning,
began their trek on the new San José -
Caldera highway, taking advantage of the
remainder of the Semana Santa holiday.
The ones that got on the road early enough
were on the Pacific, Guanacaste or Souther
zone beaches in no time. However, the ones
who left just a little later, found a wall
of vehicles, completely collapsing the
carrettera, moreso than the first week of
operation last January.
The congestion was such that the road
concessionaire, Autopistas del Sol, decided
to suspend the tolls at La Guacima and
Atenas for a while, to move traffic.
The congestion on the highway began in
Escazú and continued all the way to
Puntarenas.
Hearing of the news of the heavy congestion,
many decided to take the old route to the
Pacific, the Aguacate and the Interamericana.
Although those roads were not as congested,
traffic was heavier that normal.
On the autopistas General Cañas, the traffic
ahead of the Virilla bridge (the "platina"
bridge) on the direction of the airport was
complete choked off as drivers slowed down,
even stopped as is the custom, as they
crossed the 10 centimetre gap between the
bridge spans.
Some decided to turn around and make the
best of their vacation at home.
Ofelia Taitelbaum, the Defensora de los
Habitantes (Ombudswoman), dressed in beach
gear, was overheard at a local supermarket
in Multiplaza, Escazú, telling her story of
how traffic was so heavy that the family
decided to make an about turn.
Traffic today, Friday, should be lighter.
However, the return home that begins
Saturday and continues into Sunday, is
expected to be one of the worst.
