Drivers More Responsible On
The Roads;11 Less Deaths
The intensified police presence and the new
Ley de Tránsito is paying off, such that the
director of the Policía de Tránsito (traffic
police), German Marín, reports 11 deaths
less this Semana Santa as compared to the
same period during last year.
Marín said that the stop checks and the high
fines and loss of points has resulted in a
notable difference in driver responsibility.
As of Thursday morning, Tránsito reported 16
deaths on the highways since the beginning
of the Semana Santa vacation, 11 less than
the same number of days in 2009.
Tránsito began last Saturday an intense
campaign of controls on the highways. Marín
explained that his officers have so far
issued 1.415 tickets for all sorts of
infractions, from not wearing seatbelts (the
leading) to talking on a cell phone while
driving to speeding and not obeying traffic
signals.
That number, according to Marín is a 30%
reduction from the number of tickets issued
during the same period last year.
