5.2 Quake Shakes Costa Rica
It was 2:50pm when an earthquake registering
5.2 on the Richter scale hit Costa Rica,
which was reported felt throughout the
country.
The Observatorio Vulcanológico y Sismológico
de Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported that the
epicentre was located in the Pacific ocean,
some 112 kilometres from San José, at a
depth of 26 kilometres.
The Ovsicori reports the origin of is due to
a subduction of the Cocos tectonic plate,
beneath the Caribe plate.
The first detection of the tremor was
recorded at the Oviscori centre30 kilometres
southwest of Palmar Sur.
María Martínez, of the Ovsicori, added that
reports of the tremor came from all over the
country.
No reports of injuries or property damage
was reported.

The subduction zone is the place where two
lithospheric plates come
together, one riding over the other. Most
volcanoes on land occur
parallel to and inland from the boundary
between the two plates.
