UNESCO Asks Honduras To Stop Killing of Journalists

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova has urged Honduran authorities to do everything they can to arrest those who have assassinated journalists in that Central American country after the new government was installed last January.

Bokova called to put an end to "this intolerable and unprecedented violent wave" when she condemned the assassination of radio reporters Jose Bayardo Mairena and Manuel Juarez on March 26.

Mairena and Juarez were victims of an ambush near Juticalpa, a locality of Olancho province. Four unidentified armed people shot their car.

Since March 1 five journalists have been murdered in Honduras.

In a statement, UNESCO indicates that prior to the last two assassinations, a journalist named Nahum Palacios Arteaga was killed on March 14, radio reporter David Meza and anchorman Joseph Hernandez Ochoa were killed on March 1 in an attack in which a third colleague was seriously injured.
