Semana Santa Turns Bloody In Guatemala

Semana Santa  (Holy Week) leading to Easter Sunday turned bloody in Guatemala after scores of people were killed and injured in separate incidents. Vice Minister of the Interior Sergio Mendizabal told AFP Saturday that 36 had died from gunshot wounds.

He added that Guatemala also saw a record number of road accidents, fatal stabbings and drownings during the eight days of Christian rituals.

Meanwhile, more than 50 people were injured in attacks during Semana Santa.

Mendizabal also said that 190 people had been arrested for various crimes.

Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion. They celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday.
