More Of The Same Expected Today
As expected, the San José - Caldera
carretera collapsed under the heavy volume
of traffic on the first day back from Semana
Santa, as many decided to make the return
home early from the Central and North
Pacific beaches and resorts.
The Policía de Tránsito report that the
Puntarenas - Orotina section of the
carretera took more than an hour to cross,
when it normally takes 20 minutes at best
under normal traffic conditions.
Yesterdays massive movement on the carretera
was the reverse experienced on Thursday,
possibly by the same drivers, on the way to
the Pacific coast from San José.
The road concessionaire, Autopistas del Sol,
expected some 25.000 vehicles to use
carretera each day Saturday and today,
Sunday and had/have in place an emergency
plan to ease congestion, including of
charging tolls in advance, which as it
appears did not work yesterday.
According to the director de Tránsito,
German Marín, the situation was expected as
more and more Costa Ricans head out of San
José for the holidays.
The director is making a call for returning
vacationers to stagger their hours, come
back at off peak hours to ease congestion
and reduce their time on the road and to
take alternate routes, where possible. |
