Over 290 Killed During Semana Santa In Central America

More than 290 people were killed during the Eastertide holidays in Central American countries, local police and rescue teams reported Sunday.

The Guatemalan Civil National Police (PNC) said in a report that a total of 102 people were killed during Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the country. Among them, 50 died in violence, 30 in traffic accidents and 12 drowned.

Meanwhile, the Guatemalan police said that 225 people were injured and 200 others were detained during the holidays.

In Honduras, at least 52 people died and 88 others were injured in various accidents during the holidays, according to Daniel Molina, the spokesman of the National Commission of Accidents Prevention.

According to Molina, 30 people were killed during traffic accidents and 22 drowned in different beaches, rivers and resorts.

Molina said that the death and injured toll decreased slightly compared with 2009.

The country's fire department also reported 189 fires, 109 of which were on land, 65 in forests, 12 in buildings and three in vehicles.

In El Salvador, 26 people died during the holidays, and 17 of them were killed in traffic accidents, according to the National System of Civil Protection.

According to the organization, a total of 364 traffic accidents were registered this year, up 40 percent compared with that in 2009.

In the Dominican Republic, 22 people were killed and 280 others injured in accidents during the holidays, the country's emergency center said on Sunday.

Among the victims, 20 people died in traffic accidents, and the other two drowned, the emergency center said in a report.

During the holiday period, some 372 people were detained in the capital city of Santo Domingo, and the northern cities of Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris.

Among the detainees, 360 were men, including six Haitian citizens and one Peruvian.

Meanwhile, the National Drug Control Administration and the national police seized 10 kg of marijuana.

A total of eight shootings were registered, and 41 motorcycles were seized during Semana Santa.

The Nicaraguan authorities said that a total of 65 people died in the country due to different reasons during the holidays.

At least 25 of them were killed in traffic accidents, 18 were murdered, six died during a shooting and 16 drowned, they said.
