Fiscal Package Affects
Honduras Poorest Sectors
TEGUCIGALPA - The poorest sectors in
Honduras will suffer the most the negative
impact of the package of fiscal adjustments
approved by the National Congress, warned on
Monday Tiempo newspaper.
The "paquetazo" (big package) is aimed at
large and small contributors but the
measures have a multiplier effect that will
hit the poorest people. It is like the old
saying warning about the rope that
invariably breaks on the weaker side, the
paper said.
This plan which could collects around $200
millions annually includes a hike in energy,
telephone, Internet services and housing
rental prices as well as drinks, cigarettes
and cars.
"It is good money and like it or not it will
have to come up from the pocket of all
Hondurans" says the newspaper of San Pedro
Sula city.
Although employers must pay for the income
tax and for the Solidarity Contribution,
several owners said publicly they will
transfer all the costs to users, reported
Tiempo.
"We know the increase of the production
costs, rents and consumables the employers
suffer will be transferred to final
consumers" said Daniel Duron, secretary of
the Workers Central General.
The union leader warned of the possibility
that in the coming days will raise the
prices of basic foodstuffs.
