Chilean Quake Victims Ask
Quick Housing Solution
SANTIAGO DE CHILE - Two hundred citizens of
the Chilean southern region of Bio Bio, one
of the most devastated by the February 27
earthquake, demanded the Chilean authorities
a definite solution because of the lack of
dwellings.
Protestants peacefully met in front of the
House of Government of Concepcion, 310.6
miles away from the capital and accused the
local authorities of slow to solve the
problems, especially in Hualqui, Tome,
Chiguayante, Dichato and Talcahuano.
They asked for a meeting with Governor
Jacqueline van Rysselberghe to demand the
cancellation of the debt, subsidy for the
affected houses and soil analysis for
construction.
Miguel Concha, leader of Chilean
organization ANDHA in this region, said that
there is a study in which houses have been
built in inappropriate places, and the real
estate companies, with the intention to earn
millions of dollars, have constructed with
the knowledge these places are
inappropriate.
A total of 1,000 neighbors from the
destroyed resort of Dichato blocked the
access, protesting for the lack of solutions
in a place where sea water penetrated 1,300
feet inside solid ground.
Demonstrators expressed Chilean press media
their discomfort and disappointment because
of the lack of "concrete solutions".
