Riteve Fees Could
Double In The Coming Months
The cost of vehicular inspection could
double in the coming months if the Autoridad
Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
approves a request made last November by
Riteve, the company that provides the
compulsory vehicle inspection service.
Riteve is asking to increase the passenger
vehicle rate from the current ¢9.930 to
¢19.879 and motorcycles would pay ¢13.090
instead of ¢6.541.
The increase also being asked for heavy
vehicles that now pay ¢13.076 to pay
¢26.180; taxis would pay ¢21.445 instead of
10.714 and buses ¢26.180 from ¢13.076.
However, there is debate if the Aresep has
the authority to moderate Riteve's rates,
consulting the Procuraduría General de la
República (Attorney General's office) to
clarification if it has the power as
mandated in the reforms to the Ley de
Tránsito that is now under discussion by
legislators.
The state attorney says that Aresep has the
authority to intervene, directly and
immediately the economic activity and legal
status of a regulated entity with public
interest, whether public or private.
Before the Aresep approves the Riteve
application the regulator must analyze the
financial position of the company.
Riteve has not changed its fees in the last
five years.
The Aresep has two months to study the
request before rendering a decision which
could be delayed some with the departure of
Regulador, Fernando Herrero. |
