President-Elect Chinchilla To Tour Central
America
President-elect, Laura Chinchilla, will be
making a tour of Central America prior to
her taking office on May 8.
The Central American tour will take
Chinchilla to Honduras, El Salvador and
Nicaragua.
In the case of Nicaragua, she will try to
improve bilateral links now weakened because
of the procedures used by the administration
of his predecessor Oscar Arias.
Costa Rica and Nicaragua kept a strong
dispute on the navigation over bordering San
Juan River for years.
In July 2009, the International Justice
Court of Le Hague granted the government of
San Jose the right to navigate freely, but
just for commercial objectives, and
recognized the right of Nicaragua to make
inspections of the Costa Rican ships and
request identity and trading documents.
Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes
announced Thursday he would meet Costa Rican
president-elect Laura Chinchilla on Monday.
President Chinchilla will fulfill an
invitation from some Salvadoran political
sectors, but her Salvadoran counterpart did
not give details on the topics to deal with
in the meeting.
In a press conference, Funes said that the
Chinchilla's stay is part of a courtesy
visit to the Central American countries.
