Venezuela Rejects Honduras
Inclusion in OAS
WASHINGTON - Venezuela's representative to
the Organization of American States (OAS)
Roy Chaderton rejected on Thursday signs
given by the government of President
Porfirio Lobo to re-integrate Honduras into
the continental bloc.
In remarks to journalists, Chaderton
wondered which the credentials presented by
Lobo were to accept his country again in
OAS, a body from which Honduras was expelled
in the wake of a coup against President
Manuel Zelaya in June.
The Honduran government has not demonstrated
support to democratic standards, which can
be seen in its repression of people opposed
to the coup and its refusal to accept the
return of Zelaya, said Chaderton.
Honduras was expelled from OAS by the
majority of the members of the bloc.
However, after Lobo's coming to power, some
countries led by the United States have
demanded a lifting of sanctions.
Chaderton lamented the failure of efforts
carried out by OAS to reverse the coup
against Zelaya, and questioned the bloc's
effectiveness in addressing such situations.
