Honduras, Nicaragua Restore
Ties Following Coup
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega warmly
welcomed his conservative Honduran
counterpart for a visit Friday to discuss
restoring relations strained by the
overthrow of Honduras' former president.
The visit is the latest sign of success in
Honduran President Porfirio Lobo's campaign
to end his Central American country's
international isolation.
Ortega greeted Lobo with a hug at the
airport in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua.
"Unity is a vital need for Central America,"
Ortega said later Friday, adding that
Central American leaders need to reactive
the System for Central American Integration,
founded in 1991 to strengthen political,
economic and social unity in the region.
"This is of great significance," said
Jacinto Suarez, who is in charge of foreign
relations policy for Ortega's Sandinista
party. "It re-establishes communication
between the two countries."
