Honduras Invitation To EU-LatAm
Summit Criticized
MADRID, Spain - European Union Deputy from
United Left Party Willy Meyer criticized the
Spanish government on Friday for inviting
Honduran President Porfirio Lobo to the 6th
European Union-Latin America and Caribbean
Summit to be held in May.
Meyer considered that the invitation made to
Lobo by the administration of President Jose
Luis Zapatero comes along with the
recognition of legitimacy of a government
derived from an electoral process not
recognized by the international community.
The deputy recalled in a note that the
latest elections in Honduras were marked by
the militarization, following the coup
d'etat staged on June 28, 2009, against
constitutional President Manuel Zelaya.
In his opinion, the presence of Lobo at the
heads of States and Government meeting, to
be held from May 17 to 18 in Madrid, will
only contribute to a negative image for the
future young Latin American democracies.
The Spanish representative to the European
Union holds that the Latin American
political scene could be shaken by similar
military coups if the international
community admits and recognizes such actions
instead of sanctioning them.
Meyer also called Zapatero's executive to
keep in mind that brutal human right
violations are staged in that Central
American nation under Lobo's administration,
mentioning as an example the killing of
farmers, professors, and journalists opposed
to the current regime installed in Honduras.
