Fidel Castro Praises Cuban
Leader's Courage To Resist Western Pressure
HAVANA - Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro on
Friday praised incumbent leader Raul
Castro's courage to resist the pressure
imposed by the United States and the
European Union (EU).
Raul gave a speech on Sunday, accusing the
United States and the EU of conducting a
campaign against Cuba after Cuban dissident
Orlando Zapata died in February following a
hunger strike.
Cuba would never yield to the "blackmail" of
any countries, no matter how powerful they
are, the current Cuban leader said.
"It was a thrust deep into the empire and
its allies," Fidel wrote in his editorial
published by local media.
The former Cuban leader said that in 51
years of revolution, Cuba has been "besieged
by nasty lies and slander" but "remains
determined to resist."
The former president added that the
intensification of the trade embargo affects
Cuba economically and financially, but it is
particularly important to overcome all the
conspiracies against the development of
Cuba's economy.
Fidel handed over power to his brother Raul
for health reasons in June 2006.
