Venezuela Insists on Extradition of Putschist

CARACAS - Venezuelan Attorney General Luisa Ortega ratified yesterday the demand made by her country to Colombia to extradite Pedro Francisco Carmona Estanga, self proclaimed president during the failed coup of 2002.

In the radio program En Sintonia con el Ministerio Publico, Ortega explained that this institution has received no reply from Colombia on the extradition of Carmona requested in the wake of events of April 2002.

Since 2008 Venezuela has requested the extradition of the de facto president when President Hugo Chavez was overthrown for a few hours and returned to power by the population and the military who respected the Constitution.

Ortega recalled that after this brief usurpation of power, Carmona abolished the Constitution of the Republic and dissolved public powers.

Asked about his alleged political asylum, the Attorney General pointed out that this institution has not been formally notified that Carmona, the former president of the Venezuelan Federation of Chambers of Commerce, has been granted that condition.

She also stated that authorities have been demanding from the United States the extraditions of Luis Posada Carriles, responsible of blowing up a Cubana passenger plane in 1976, as well as of former president Carlos Andres Perez for crimes known as El Caracazo and of Eligio Cedeno for fiscal irregularities.

She recalled that Venezuela has paid attention to requests of citizens by other countries through extradition and the red alert of the International Police (INTERPOL).
