Police Patrol In
A Hummer
The Vigilancia
Aérea de la
Fuerza Pública
(Air
Surveillance
police unit) is
showing off its
new patrol
vehicle, a
Hummer.
The expensive
vehicle was not
actually
purchased by the
police, it was
given to them by
the Instituto
Costarricense
sobre Drogas (ICD),
confiscated by a
drug trafficker.
Mauricio
Boraschi,
director of the
ICD and the
anti-drug Czar
in the
Chinchilla
administration,
explained that
the law allows
the confiscation
of goods from
drug traffickers
and handed over
to the
specialized
police units who
are fighting the
war on drugs.
Boraschi said
the law allows
the "putting to
use" of
confiscated
goods involved
in drug
trafficking and
money
laundering.
This time
Vigilancia Aérea
got the prize,
the Hummer that
has been all
decked out with
police lights,
sirens and
lettering.
And though one
would think the
upkeed on the
vehicle would be
expensive, not
so when the
vehicle
exonerated from
paying taxes.
The marchamo for
the vehicle is
now ¢50.000
colones (less
than us$100),
but it cost the
previous owner
some ¢2 million
colones or
us$4.000.
Boraschi added
that not only
confiscated
vehicles are put
to use, as well
cash and other
goods are being
well used by
police to combat
drug
trafficking.
